Six Unit Apartment Building in the Downtown?
The Town of Stewiacke has received a proposal to construct a two-story, six-unit, apartment building at 84 and 88 Main Street. This lot is now vacant but at one time or another contained a laundromat, a tavern, a convenience store and apartments, as shown below. The site is zoned Downtown Commercial (C-1). Residential units are not permitted on the ground floor in the C-1 Zone in order to preserve space for commercial development in the Downtown. For this development to go ahead the Land Use By-law would have to be amended to permit residential uses on the ground floor.

The amendment could be done in such a way that any residential use on the ground floor could in the future be converted to a commercial use without changing the By-law. The Planning Advisory Committee will hold a Public Meeting to receive comments on this proposal on March 18, 2020, 7:00 pm, at the Council Chambers, Town Hall, 295 George Street, Stewiacke.

The Planning Advisory Committee has also discussed requiring a fence between the rear yard and the CN Railway line as a protection measure. This would apply to this and similar future developments. Your comments on this change are also important.

If you have any questions or would like to make a comment before the Public Meeting please contact Grant Cooke, Planner at (902) 293-4720, This email address is being protected from spambots. Please note there will be another opportunity for public comment before an amendment to the Land Use By-law can be adopted by Council.
