The Keeping of Horses by Site Plan Approval
The keeping of horses in the General Residential (R-2) zone is permitted in Stewiacke but is subject to the restriction of a minimum of 1 acre (.4 hectares) for the first animal plus .5 acres (.2 hectares) for each subsequent animal. Earlier this year the Town received a request to permit up to three horses on a lot that does not have the required area (two acres) for three horses.
The Planning Advisory Committee (PAC) reviewed this request. The Committee decided it may be acceptable to permit three horses on R-2 lots having less than two acres if the physical characteristics and location of the lots was such that there would be minimal impact on surrounding residential uses. This can be accomplished by amending the planning documents to use the site plan tool contained in the Municipal Government Act.
Before making a formal recommendation to Council the PAC will hold a virtual public meeting to receive the views of Stewiacke residents. This meeting will be held on November 17, 2021 at 6:30 p.m.
A planning report which provides more information is available on the Town’s website or can be requested from the Town Office.
