SACRED LIGHTING - DENNIS PARK GAZEBO
Friday 27 May 27, 2022 - 7:30PM
Talking about residential schools can be tough. These traumatizing and culture-stripping institutions imposed death, abuse and other types of inhumane cruelty onto innocent children. But just because it’s hard doesn’t mean we should shy away from it. The Town of Stewiacke wants to recognize these tragedies annually in tribute to this terrible loss of lives.
Please join Elder Joe Michael for a Sacred Lighting Ceremony to remember all the First Nations children who lost their lives at Residential Schools.
Elder Joe Michael will open with prayers and will speak about the Residential Schools. Elder Joe Michael was a day student at the Shubenacadie Residential School, which closed on 22 June, 1967.
The lights will remain on continuously for four days for the Sacred Lighting and then will be turned on nightly until National Indigenous Peoples Day on 21 June, 2022. Pole banners, a street banner and a scared lighting of the Dennis Park gazebo will highlight our commemoration of this sad part of Canadian history.
