The Tourism Marketing Levy is a provincial initiative to sustainably grow local tourism by providing a revenue source to support integrated and expanded marketing initiatives. The municipality of Colchester is mandated to administer the program within the county of Colchester, the Town of Truro, the Town of Stewiacke and within the community of Millbrook First Nation. Accommodation operators within these regions are required to register for the levy and collect, report and remit a 3% levy on all accommodations sold to overnight visitors. This requirement became effective April 1, 2024.
Strategic Tourism Expansion Program (STEP)
In 2024, the Town of Stewiacke, County of Colchester, Town of Truro, and Millbrook First Nation, proactively facilitated Tourism Atlantic’s (ACOA) Strategic Tourism Expansion Program (STEP) process to create a Regional Strategic Tourism Plan for the region. The Plan, which was approved by each partner in February and March 2025, addresses existing opportunities and challenges and lays the foundation for long-term initiatives to ensure responsible and sustainable success for the region’s communities, citizens, and tourism sector.
